I started Dresslikeapirate.com in 1998 as an E-bay Business called Hal’s Since 2001, selling vintage clothing and housewares, which included lots of Medieval feast gear or Pirate flavored items from my time dating a guy in the SCA, knowing that there was a market. ( I was also a washerwoman at Pleasure Faire back in the 70’s. ) What started as a hobby during my time as an Office Manager for a website development company became a full time business when the dot com bubble burst and the company had to close.

With a special needs child getting off the schoolbus in the middle of the afternoon, it was the perfect excuse to build a business from home, and extend to ready made clothing . After receiving the first 75 pirate shirts and selling them out in 3 weeks, the very last shirt going Express Mail, I was told by the post office clerk “Did you know that September 19th is Talk Like A Pirate Day?” Well, don’t you know I rushed home, looked it up, found out the Pirate Guys were right down the road in Albany, Oregon, and exclaimed “You guys will be my friends for life!” and named the new venture Dresslikeapirate.com. To this day, the Pirate Guys are my friends, my son has played with Chumbucket’s son, and I dressed his wife for the Pirate episode of Wife Swap.

The website went live in 2003 and grew from just a dozen or so items of clothing to over 500 items at it’s peak, and it was my full time career for over 21 years.  Then Covid hit.  No events=no sales.  I had to move, downsize, then move and downsize again.  Now my focus is on just the clothing lines that I have produced under the dresslikeapirate.com label, and have closed-out all resale accessories.  Looking back at this update, now that it’s been 3 years, it was naive to think it would be back to full inventory in a year.  It will take probably another year or more to completely fill in all the colors and sizes to full stock.  Contact me here:  the contact page  if you have any questions.

This is a beautiful skirt that exceeded my expectations and was a very pleasant surprise. This is not your typical costume skirt; this is a heavy, well made “real” garment with beautiful detail. I’ve purchased steampunk costumes before from other websites and have received cheap horribly made costumes that cost as much, if not more, than this skirt. Another surprise was the fast shipping from Dress Like a Pirate. I placed my order on Wednesday, and had my skirt (shipped all the way from Oregon to New Hampshire) on Saturday. I was invited to a pirate-themed wedding and searched high and low for costumes, finding nothing but cheese. I found something on Amazon that looked good in the picture, but turned out to be flimsy and not of the caliber appropriate to a wedding. Running out of time, I made one last, desperate search and stumbled on your site. It is so hard to shop for clothing without trying it on. Since it’s not Halloween season yet, finding costumes in person is tricky without traveling all over Hell and back. So I held my breath and took another chance. I’m glad I did! I LOVE your stuff!

The pants will work perfectly due to the nifty lacing making them wide enough for my calves. I will find some shocking red leggings to show through the laced section of the pant (I will cut off the feet and wear some flashy toe rings). All I need to do is put a gusset in the crotch this weekend to allow for a little more ease in the tush (guess guy pirates have less ample fannys). This is going to so much fun. I really appreciate good service and am always quick to tell people about it, and I was very impressed with the level of service you provided me. You should totally send me some business cards though, because I am going again next year and will absolutely hand them out for you when I go. If you add a comment section to the accessories pages of your website I will put up some more comments for you- my friends bought your top hats and mdg goggles and some clothes for a steampunk look. I think I will be doing that next year, as well as a new pirate outfit (it was nice but I left in the trash there because new Orleans is dirty beyond belief!) which is good for you. So if you get time, do that and will put up new comments. Anything else I can do to help you spread the word just let me know and I will. I really appreciate the help and just the quality of your product. It is so hard to look for this kind of stuff as a big size guy and if it weren’t for you, I would have had nothing. Trust me, I spent hours and hours looking before I found you, and really would have had nothing that fit and would have been miserable the whole time. Couldn’t be more pleased! You were right…the large peasant shirt isn’t too large. And the small bodice isn’t too small once it’s laced and cinched. I’m glad I went with your advise. The pirate vest color also is perfect. Thanks for the extra effort in locating the pirate shirt in black. We now feel “ready” to attend our son’s wedding on Oct. 31. There will no doubt be other pirates there, but none as finely dressed as us!
